Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been nominated for the 2023 Democracy Award by the Association of Political Consultants of Africa (APCA).
This was contained in a statement by the association on Thursday.
According to the statement, the award will be presented to the governor at the 7th Africa Political Summit & Diamond Awards slated to hold from 11th to 14th December, 2024, at Lux Marijani, Zanzibar, Tanzania.
APCA maintained that the Democracy Award is aimed at recognising political leaders who have made significant contributions to democratic leadership.
The award would see Sanwo-Olu join past winners which include Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethopia, Kenyan President, William Ruto, as well as Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The statement reads in part: “The Association of Political Consultants Africa (APCA) is proud to announce the nomination of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, as a recipient of the 2023 Democracy Award. This award will be presented at the 7th Africa Political Summit & Diamond Awards, taking place December 11-14, 2024, at Lux Marijani, Zanzibar, Tanzania. The summit will be declared open by the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
The Democracy Award recognizes political leaders who have made significant contributions to democratic leadership, development, and governance. Governor Sanwo-Olu joins an illustrious group of past recipients, including: Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia; President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria; and President William Ruto of Kenya.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated exceptional leadership by building the capacity of state secretaries and improving governance structures within Lagos State. His efforts have set a benchmark for effective governance and democratic practices,” said Temitope Lakisokun, Chairperson of APCA in Nigeria.
The 7th Africa Political Summit & Diamond Awards will bring together political leaders, consultants, and stakeholders from across the continent and beyond, to discuss and promote democratic values and practices.
