Retired Brigadier-General Sani Usman has described late journalist and publisher Dotun Oladipo as a highly respected professional whose contributions strengthened Nigeria’s media industry.

Usman, a former Director of Army Public Relations, expressed his condolences following the death of Oladipo, who was the publisher of The Eagle Online.

Oladipo died on Tuesday in Lagos at the age of 56, leaving behind a career marked by decades of journalism, editorial leadership and digital media development.

In a tribute message released on Wednesday, Usman described Oladipo’s passing as a major loss to his family, colleagues, members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), and the wider Nigerian media community.

He said the late journalist was known for combining professionalism, wisdom and personal warmth in his dealings with colleagues and stakeholders.

According to Usman, Oladipo possessed a deep understanding of journalism, publishing and the changing demands of the digital media environment.

He noted that the late publisher played an important role in the growth of online journalism in Nigeria at a time when digital publishing was still developing.

Usman said Oladipo’s leadership of GOCOP came during a crucial period for online publishers, adding that his commitment helped strengthen the organisation and promote professional standards among members.

He praised Oladipo’s efforts in encouraging cooperation, ethical publishing and responsible journalism within Nigeria’s digital media space.

“Dotun was a great friend and trusted professional colleague who was always there with wise counsel, support and a reassuring word,” Usman said.

The retired Army spokesman recalled his working relationship with Oladipo during his time as Director of Army Public Relations, describing him as accessible, fair-minded and committed to accurate public communication.

He said Oladipo demonstrated a strong understanding of the relationship between the military, media and the public, contributing positively to communication efforts.

Usman added that their professional relationship continued even after his retirement from the Nigerian Army, with Oladipo remaining a dependable colleague who offered thoughtful advice and constructive perspectives.

He said the journalist’s death had created a significant gap among media professionals, publishers, public relations practitioners and others who benefited from his experience.

Usman described Oladipo’s passion for journalism, dedication to excellence and commitment to building a stronger online media industry as part of his lasting legacy.

He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s immediate family, the leadership and members of GOCOP, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, and the Nigerian journalism community.

The former Army spokesperson prayed for comfort for those mourning the journalist and asked God to grant Oladipo eternal rest.

He added that the late journalist’s contributions to Nigerian journalism and digital publishing would continue to inspire future generations of media professionals.
