A female shop attendant, Esther Obasy, 31, who allegedly absconded with her employer’s N2.4 million, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Obasy, a resident of Alhaji Raimi, Coker, Orile, Lagos, allegedly committed the offence on March 28 at No. 1 Idumagbo Avenue, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused absconded with the N2.4 million cash, belonging to her employer, Mr Ernest Ofora, the same month she was employed.
“The complainant gave the accused the money to deposit in his bank account, but she disappeared with it and all efforts made to retrieve the money proved unsuccessful.

“The accused was nowhere to be found and anytime the complainant called her, she refused to pick her calls; she later changed her line.

“When her house was visited, her neighbours told the complainant that she had packed her belongings and that she did not tell them where she was going.

“She was, however, later arrested when her phone was tracked,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the sum of N1million was found in the accused bank account.

The offence, Olatunde said, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.

Magistrate Aka Bashorun grant her bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned till September 14 for mention.
