A 23-year-old policeman, Victor Abule, was killed on New Year day in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Until his death, Abule was attached to the state police command.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Asinim Butswat, confirmed the killing on Sunday.
He revealed that a five-man robbery gang had attacked and robbed one Evelyn Patrick at Agudama area of Yenagoa on that fateful day, shooting dead Abule in the process.
He explained that as the robbers tried to escape, they were engaged in a gun duel by a police officer, who shot dead one of them.
“A police officer confronted the armed men and shot dead one of them as they were escaping. The officer sustained gunshot wounds and he was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died.
“Efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects while investigation into the incident is ongoing.’’
