The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) remains a critical pillar in the structure of national security.
Across the country, thousands of officers risk their lives daily in service to the nation. Yet, the actions of a few bad eggs continue to endanger this hard-earned trust, casting a dark shadow on the integrity of the entire institution.
On Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, a disturbing incident unfolded, involving members of the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity).
Returning from their 49th National Converge held in Owerri, Imo State, they were intercepted near Benin City, Edo State, by six policemen under the pretence of a routine stop-and-search operation.
Rather than conducting a lawful engagement, these officers engaged in brazen extortion, forcibly taking the sum of N2 million from a member and personal items, and official regalia from the rest of them.
The culprits comprised:
• Three Inspectors
• One Constable
• One unconfirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP – one star)
• One confirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP – two stars)
While the four junior officers have been immediately placed under orderly room trial, preceding their dismissal from the Police Force, the two ASPs—by virtue of their commissioned ranks—are being subjected to internal disciplinary procedures and will be formally issued queries pending further administrative action.
What followed this unfortunate breach of public trust, however, was a powerful demonstration of leadership, accountability, and professionalism.
The members of the Association, guided by discipline and respect for the rule of law, resisted the temptation to retaliate or escalate the situation. Instead, they reported the incident through the appropriate channels.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika (fdc), acted swiftly and decisively.
Within hours, he:
• Ensured the full recovery and return of the stolen N2 million,
• Returned all seized personal effects and official regalia,
• Initiated disciplinary action against the offending officers,
• And communicated openly with the leadership of the Association to ensure that justice would be served transparently.
The NAS Cap’n, Dr. Joseph Oteri, has since expressed appreciation to CP Agbonika for his firm and principled handling of the matter.
In his words, “Your actions have not only restored what was lost but have restored confidence in the fact that there are still leaders within the Nigeria Police Force committed to the ideals of justice, accountability, and service.”
This incident, while regrettable, serves as a case study in ethical response—both on the part of the victimised citizens and the Police Command leadership. It proves that misconduct can be confronted and corrected when citizens act responsibly and public officers act with courage and integrity.
As Nigerians, we must remain vigilant in holding institutions accountable, while also amplifying stories of courage and reform. CP Agbonika has shown that it is possible to lead without compromise and to uphold the honour of the uniform.
The Nigeria Police Force must continue to weed out corrupt officers and support those committed to protecting the nation with honour and dignity. That is how trust will be rebuilt—one principled action at a time.
