The House of Representatives says it will investigate the alleged technical error responsible for the mass failure recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion of Urgent Matter of Public Importance by Adewale Adebayo (PDP-Osun) at plenary on Thursday.
It would be recalled that the 2025 UTME results faced widespread condemnations and rejections just after Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) released them.
According to the breakdown, more than 78 per cent of candidates scored less than 200 points out of 400 points.
Many candidates alleged technical error and infrastructure deficiencies in many centres as reasons for the mass failure.
In a swift response, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said the results of 379,997 candidates were affected.
He explained that the board discovered discrepancies linked to faulty server updates in its Lagos and south-east zones.
According to him, the glitches led to the failure to upload candidates’ responses during the first three days of the examination.
Oloyede said that the technical glitches on the part of some technical service providers were responsible for the mass failure, went undetected before the results were released.
He said that the affected candidates will now have the opportunity to retake the examination between May 16 and 19.
Moving the motion, Adebayo said many Nigerian children and their families, suffered losses while travelling long distances to their UTME examination centres.
In his contribution to the motion, Sada Soli (APC-Katsina) urged the House to commend the JAMB Registrar for admitting that there were technical errors and for apologising to Nigerians.
The lawmaker said that the JAMB helmsman had demonstrated integrity and increased the board’s revenue since his appointment as registrar.
In his ruling, Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, mandated the relevant committees led by the Commitee on Basic Education to carry out the investigation.
