A university Don, Dr.Tayo Popoola, has advised the Lagos State Government to rename Lagos State University (LASU) after the former governor Lateef Kayode Jakande who would be buried today.
Dr.Popoola,a front line journalist and Deputy Director, Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), University of Lagos stated that ” there is no other better way to immortalise LKJ than renaming LASU after him.
Said he “LKJ established LASU as part of his free education programme of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and he did excellently well”.
Dr.Popopla, who is a Senior Lecturer in the Department Mass communication, contended that of the four out of the five UPN controlled states in the South West during the Second Republic, namely, Lagos,Ogun,Oyo,Ondo and Edo States only LASU is yet to be renamed after the founder.
“In Ogun State, Chief Bisi Onabanjo established the state University that was renamed after him.
“Chief Adekunle Ajasin established the Ondo State university that was been renamed after him when he died.
“Similarly,Prof Ambrose Alli established a state University at Ekpoma,his home town.lt has since been renamed after him”.
While noting that all the renaming took place after their deaths,Dr. Popoola said Nigerians should imbibe the idea of honouring people when they are alive.
Dr.Popoola therefore stated that considering the educational revolution of LKJ in Lagos State during the Second Republic, renaming LASU after him would be a welcome development.
