Students of the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, (FECA), Ondo State on Tuesday prostested the raping of three female students of the institution by some hoodlums who invaded the campus on Monday night.
For hours, the students blocked the popular Fiwasaye/Owo road and caused traffic gridlock.
The major grouse of the students was that securitymen on campus could no longer guarantee the safety of students and staff.
The irate students, who carried sticks and leaves, molested commercial motorcyclists (okada), motorists and journalists who wanted to find out the cause of the protests.
President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Oladipo Akindamini, said five hoodlums led by one part-time student invaded the campus that night and went straight to the female hostel.
According to him, two of the female students were seriously matcheted by the rapists during the time they were trying to overpower them.
He said the students, who were preparing for their examination, shouted for help but the hoodlums overpowered and raped them.
The injured students are receiving treatments at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure.
Akindamini said what angered the students was the conduct of the Chief Security Officer (CSO) who allowed one of the hoodlums arrested by the students to escape and the threat of the hoodlums to stage a revenge mission.
He said the management of the institution did not show any concern when the issue was reported.
He added that instead of the management to redress the issue, he said the Provost just told them to go to their classes to write their examination.
When reporters got to the campus, the students said they would want the government to address the security challenges in the institution as this was not the first time such an incident happened.
Calm was later restored.
