The Enugu State Government has suspended the ongoing fixing of potholes in the urban metropolis of the state due to frequent rainfall.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Greg Nnaji, on Friday in Enugu.
Nnaji explained that the action was as a result of the frequent rainfalls during the asphalt paving operations and preparatory works.
This include cutting, removal of unsuitable materials, filling and compaction with stone base as well as priming with bitumen.
He disclosed that the stability of the pavement can be hindered by pockets of rain water when trapped in the base course.
The commissioner, therefore, appealed to the residents to exercise patience as works on repairs of potholes will recommence after rains.
”Once the rains recede and enable the workers to carry out necessary pavement evaluations on sections already completed,” he assured.
Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has inaugurated a 17-man State Community Policing Advisory Committee with a charge on them to come up with a best community approach to build trust and mutual respect between the Police and the people, in the management of crimes and criminalities
The governor assured that his administration would continue to give priority to the people’s welfare and security.
At the event which was held at Government house, Enugu, Ugwuanyi said that the programme
re-tooled the state security architecture to bring it up to speed with emerging dimensions of insecurity and criminality” through institutionalized collaboration among its Neighbourhood Watch groups, Forest Guards and security agencies, especially
The governor charged the committee to come out with the best strategy and grassroot collaboration to ensure the security of the people. He expressed confidence that the committee members will deliver on their mandate.
Ugwuanyi disclosed that the Enugu State Security Trust Fund law is in place to ensure sustainable support for the security agencies in the state while the State Forest Guards Law is before the State Assembly.
He added that “the deployment of Automated Drone Surveillance Solution to give the needed impetus to security surveillance is underway”.
The governor stated that “the new Community Policing model is in sync with our extant strategy and will certainly be a strong flip to our modest accomplishments in security of lives and property in Enugu State”.
He noted that the Nigeria Police Force has a clear template for the implementation of the strategy.
Ugwuanyi explained that “this Committee is to oversee and coordinate the implementation of the Community Policing in Enugu State”
Speaking at the occasion, the Inspector General of Police,(IGP) Adamu Mohammed , represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, ICT, Celestine Okoye, said that some people failed to understand what community policing is all about.
Adamu added that:”The community policing programme has been of old in the society, people had been involved in it and will not be controlled by the police. It is the Community that own this and we can only recommend their uniform and thank God it is today a success.”
Speaking also, AIG in -charge of the newly created zone 13, Mr DanMallam Mohammed, said that the police will do it’s best to give South East the needed security.
He said: ‘I am happy for another opportunity to serve South East ones again in a bigger capacity.
‘Community Policing is nothing than corporation between the people of the community and the security agencies. It is a right idea at the right time. We will do our best to make sure that the good people of Enugu State, South East and beyond sleep with their two eyes closed”, he said.
In a vote of thanks, Chairman of the committee and Commissioner of Police (CP), Enugu Police Command, Mr Ahmed Abdurahaman, thanked President Mohammed Buhari for approving the project.
He also applauded the IGP for making the programme a reality. He lauded governor Ugwuanyi’s commitment to peace, which he said, contributed to the successful take-off of the programme in the South East geo-political zone.
The CP pledged the committee’s loyalty and commitment to work assiduously towards the full realization of its set-objective.
Speaking too, the Co-chairman of the committee and chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzo, assured that “the traditional rulers of Enugu State will work closely with the Committee to achieve the objectives for which it was achieved. ”
The committee members were drawn from the security agencies, religious and traditional bodies.
