Twenty three of the 26 Ogun State House of Assembly candidates for the 2019 elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were picked on Monday by Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.
While Amosun was supervising the exercise at the Presidential Lodge, Abeokuta, there were protests from some aspirants at the venue, with many of them abusing the governor and his loyalists of ‘dictatorial tendencies’.
Some of them were seen shouting: “’We will not accept this imposition; ‘You can’t stay in Abeokuta and control us in Ijebu’; ‘We will defect to other parties and win in our areas’”
However, the governor declared that the exercise was a demonstration of the ‘transparent democratic ideals of APC’.
Some security agents were seen trying to pacify the protesters.
One of Amosun’s loyalists said the candidates were adopted for 23 of the 26 seats in a process in which aspirants from the various constituencies met separately to pick who they considered most suitable among them.
Some of the candidates are Sagamu Constituency 1 (Kamar Sonowo); Sagamu Constituency 2 (Ademola Adeyinka,) ;Ijebu North 1: (Adekanbi Adegoke) ; Ijebu North 2: (Oduniyi Adelaja) ; Ijebu East (Alhaji Akinlagun Agoro ) ; Ogun Waterside: (Foye Adeniyi) ; Ewekoro: ( Yusuf Amosun) ; Abeokuta North (Modupe Mujota) ; Yewa North 1: (Bayo Adeyemi); Yewa North 2 (Olowasogo Akinde) ; Ijebu North East: (Deola Tayo); Ipokia (Sikirat Ajibola)
Amosun, while appealing to party supporters to eschew violence, declared that the arrangement, witnessed by elected party members and political appointees, “was peaceful and and accepted by all”.
He thanked the aspirants for their cooperation and urged the candidates to prepare for the election.
According to him, candidates for the three remaining seats as well as those of the National Assembly seats, will be adopted on Tuesday.
The candidates, in their speeches, commended the party and Amosun for adopting them.
