The Acting Corps Marshal, Mr Dauda Biu, says poor condition of roads is a major hindrance to safer motoring environment in the country.

Biu said this when he received officials of Nigerian Building And Road Research Institute (NBRRI), who paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) would continue to work with relevant agencies to compliment government’s huge investment in road infrastructure.

Biu called for collaboration among relevant government agencies to address the problem through the implementation of audit reports on roads in the country.

According to him, apart from the poor condition of the roads, the absence of relevant elements such as signage, hard shoulders and markings also contribute to road traffic crashes.

Biu emphasized that data collection, analysis and information gathering was paramount in road safety management.

“FRSC had established a safety engineering department to coordinate the engineering aspect of roads in Nigeria.

“They are to also carry out investigation on any fatal road crash which accounts for more than four deaths,” he said.

Biu disclosed that the FRSC had collaborated with NBRRI in carrying out studies on traffic crashes in Lagos State, including investigation of pavement failures on three major highways.

He listed the highways to include Enugu-Port Harcourt, Abuja-Lokoja and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, with emphasis on the deep hole on Rigachikun bridge in Kaduna.

The corps marshal said that the FRSC needed more collaboration to investigate pavement failures  on all the critical highways in the country.

Earlier, the Director General, NBRRI, Prof. Samson Duna stressed that the institute was conducting researches in various aspects of road safety.

He said that the aim was to ascertain the causes of roads and bridges collapse, as well as other problems, with a view to address them and make Nigerian roads safer.
