The Police Command in Enugu State said it had arrested suspected murderer and cultist, Nnaemeka Aniamalu, who had been disturbing the peace of coal camp axis of Enugu.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, made this known on Friday in Enugu.
Amaraizu said that the Anti-Cult Unit of the command recovered a locally-made double-barrel pistol from the 26-year-old “notorious suspect’’ arrested on Monday through intelligence information and swift response of operatives of the unit.
“The suspect has been on police wanted list for the murder of one Obumneke Chinegbundu alias Obumneme of Colliery Avenue, Coal Camp, Enugu, on January 21, 2019.
“Since then, the suspect escaped and allegedly took refuge in military barracks in Onitsha, Anambra.
“From the barracks, he always come to Enugu for series of cult activities and armed robbery.
“He was arrested in a hotel he lodged in Enugu through intelligent information on his movement and activities,’’ he said.
Amaraizu said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe, had directed that full-scale investigation be conducted on the suspect’s alleged nefarious activities.
“The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is over on his criminal activities,’’ he added.
Meanwhile, the police command has commenced investigation into the alleged armed robbery attack on a Catholic priest, Rev.-Fr. Paulinus Ilo, and his parishioner.
Amaraizu said that the incident happened about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
He noted that Ilo, who is the Parish Priest of St. Patrick Parish, Nomeh, was reportedly attacked by unidentified gunmen contrary to speculations that it was herdsmen attack.
“It was gathered that the priest and his parishioner were attacked by suspected hoodlums on their way on Pipeline-Nomeh Road in Nomeh community, Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state,” he stated.
He said that the priest sustained bullet wound on his leg, while the parishioner got bullet wound on her wrist.
He said: “Both were subsequently rushed to Annunciation Hospital, Emene in Enugu, where they are responding to treatment.”
Amaraizu, said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleiman Balarabe, had ordered a full scale investigation into the incident in order to unmask the perpetrators and bring them to book.
He recalled that there had been dispute between the two neighbouring communities of Nomeh and Nenwe over a land issue.
He noted that the dispute had resulted in wanton destruction of property, including a police post in the area, in spite of efforts made to restore peace among the communities.
