Policemen in Kano State have arrested a gang of armed robbers along Zaria-Kaduna highway.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Magaji Majiya, who disclosed this to newsmen in Kano, said the suspects include those who robbed Senator Kabiru Gaya and Speaker of Zamfara State House of Assembly.
He said one of the suspects, Bashir Abdurahman, a native of Zamfara, was apprehended at Gandun Albasa Quarters, Kano, on May 11, following a tip-off.
He said this led to the arrest of one Aminu Ibrahim believed to be one of the kingpin members of the syndicate.
Majiya said the suspects confessed to have attacked and robbed the Speaker of Zamfara House of Assembly and Senator Kabiru Gaya of their vehicles and other valuables.
“They also confessed to have robbed a number of vehicles within Kano State in recent times.’’
He said items recovered from the suspects include one 4Matic Mercedes Benz, one AK 47 rifle and a military trouser, among others.
He said the police had also arrested a drug baron, who concealed Indian hemp in a military painted drum, to prevent security agents from searching the vehicle they used in carrying the substance.
He said the suspect was arrested on May 14, when a team of policemen on patrol at Dawanau intercepted an unregistered vehicle.
“Operatives attached to SARS outfit have also arrested two persons, Babangida Hamza and Jafaru Aliyu, who specialised in cattle rustling and confessed to have rustled 99 cattle.
He said the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution after investigation.
