Police arraign grandmother for assaulting his grandson

A 50-year-old woman, Rashidat Yusuf, on Friday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly neglecting and assaulting her two-year-old grandson.
The defendant, a trader who lives at 16, Gloryfield Street, Ikola, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a five-count charge bordering on assault and failure to provide necessities of life.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the offences were committed between December 2015 and March 2016 in the defendant’s residence.
Aigbokhan told the court that the defendant failed to care for the boy and always beat him.
The prosecutor also said that Yusuf dipped her grandson’s hand into hot water causing him grievous harm.
“The defendant neglected the boy and does not care for him, neighbours at times had to intervene whenever she starts to beat him.
“The defendant also pushed the boy’s hand into hot water and a hot pot of soup; it was one of the neighbour’s that rushed the boy to the hospital and right now, he is on admission,’’ he said.
Aigbokhan told the court that the boy’s mother left her son with the defendant and ran away.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 135(1), 166(d), 228, 245 and 249(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
Elias adjourned the case till May 4 for mention.
