A former staff member of Salam Insurance Company, Ibadan, George Adegbenro, on Friday, appeared before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, over an alleged N50,000 fraud.

Adegbenro, 44, whose address was not provided, was charged with obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

The Prosecutor, Insp Toyin Ibrahim, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in 2022 in Ibadan.

Ibrahim said that Adegbenro falsely represented himself as a staff member of the company and obtained money from one Kayode Mutiu.

He stated that the defendant obtained the money with the pretext of helping Mutiu, the claimant, to pay it into the company’s account for the processing of his insurance policy.

Ibrahim said that the defendant, who had hitherto been suspended by the company as a result of his fraudulent attitude, failed to do so.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Magistrate, Mrs Kausarat Ayofe, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two reliable sureties in like sum.

She, thereafter, adjourned the case till Oct. 21 for hearing.
