The police, on Wednesday, arraigned a businessman, Ikwuegbu Fitzgerald, in a Kabusa Grade I Area Court, Abuja for negligently handling his dog which resulted in the injury of his neighbour.

Ikwuegbu, who resides at Chika Village, Abuja, was arraigned on two counts of negligent conduct and causing grievous hurt.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mahmud Lawal, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 17.

Lawal, alleged that the complainant, Mrs Mercy Jeremiah, who lives in the same compound with Ikwuegbu, reported the matter at the Galadimawa  Police Station.

The prosecutor said the complainant reported that the defendant’s dog attacked and bit her on her hand, right leg and other parts of her body.

He further alleged that Ikwuegbu was fond of leaving his dog uncaged in the compound despite numerous pleas to either cage or chain the dog

The prosecution counsel also told the court that Jeremiah spent N62,000 to treat herself after the attack.

Lawal said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 196 and 253 of the Penal Code law.

After the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Aliyu Kagarko, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety in like sum.
Kagarko ordered that the surety must be at least a Grade Level 10 Officer in the Federal Civil Service.

The judge also ordered that the surety must deposit an affidavit of means to the registry and valid means of identification as part of bail conditions.

Kagarko then adjourned the case until July 25, for trial.
