The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to head its campaign council in the governorship election in Edo State.
The party also appointed his Adamawa counterpart, Umar Fintiri, as the deputy campaign chairman.
This was disclosed on Friday by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, after a meeting of NWC in Abuja.
The PDP candidate in the election, Governor Godwin Obaseki, won the primary election unopposed after his opponents stepped down.
The party said it would announce the names of other members of the campaign council later.
PDP also told the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Edo election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, that the people of the South-South state have settled for Obaseki, following his record of personal character and performance in office.
The party said it noted Ize-Iyamu’s goodwill message to Obaseki on his 63rd birthday but pointed out to the APC candidate that the qualities of a governor which he listed best described Obaseki.
According to a statement by Ologbondiyan, the PDP also noted that Ize-Iyamu’s message came at the time Obaseki was also receiving a massive outpouring of solidarity messages from the people of the state, including APC leaders, who called to express their support for the PDP candidate.
PDP said it appreciated Ize-Iyamu’s excellent description of the character traits of Obaseki, stressing that in line with his message, Obaseki has, in the last four years, concentrated on unifying the state, doused political tension and remained completely focused on developing the state, which is the reason the people of Edo have collectively settled for his re-election.
The party stressed that even APC leaders, including its former National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had also testified to Obaseki’s qualities including his testimony that “Obaseki had been part of the tradition, he knows the vision, he knows the mission, he knows the target, he knows the challenges and he knows how to overcome them”.
