Gov. Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers has appealed to the nation’s armed forces to shun partisan politics in a bid to uphold the country’s democracy.
The governor spoke in Port Harcourt at the launch of the 2014 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day emblem, according to a statement.
The statement, signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, David Iyofor.
Amaechi urged the military to remain neutral in the current struggle for power by politicians ahead of 2015.
“I will say to you, the Nigerian military, do not get involved in politics.
“ Nigeria is too complicated for the military to be involved in politics,’’ he said.
Amaechi, however, thanked the military for its neutrality so far, saying “the greatest source of unity in a country is its military and you have suffered enough to fight for the unity of this country.’’
The governor acknowledged the military’s contributions to unity and nation building and urged them not to allow such contributions to go down the drain.
“In the same manner, we will enjoin the police to remain neutral; 2015 is a watershed for the country, all of us seated here must contribute to peace in Nigeria.’’
Earlier, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Retired Col. Philemon Omunakwe, thanked the governor for identifying with members.
He noted the contributions made by the military to ensure the country’s survival and unity.
Omunakwe appealed to government at all levels to appreciate the sacrifice of the country’s fallen heroes by taking care of their families.
