*Mourning the Loss of a true Statesman and an unyielding Champion of Federalism, Justice, Equity & Democracy in Nigeria

With heavy hearts but immense gratitude for a life well lived, the Federalist Majority mourns the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a fearless role model and patriot, an unwavering advocate of true federalism, and a steadfast defender of democracy in Nigeria. His transition at the age of 96 marks the departure of one of the most principled and noble voices of this century. A man whose existence was increasingly dedicated to the pursuit of justice, good governance and national unity built on equity.

Chief Adebanjo was a titan in Nigeria’s political landscape, never afraid to speak truth to power and always ready to defend the cause of justice, no matter the cost. Though his passing is an immense loss, we celebrate the incredible legacy of national service and sacrifice he leaves behind.

_*A Relentless Voice for Restructuring and Equity for more than half a century*_
From his early years, his progressive stance on matters of national and federal character development was evident. First, as a follower of the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe as early as 1942 and later as an ardent political disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1951, Pa Adebanjo demonstrated an unshakable belief in progressive governance, constitutional democracy, and the need for a federal system that guaranteed the equity of all ethnicities within the Nigerian borders. His role in the Action Group (AG, 1962) and later the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) was instrumental in shaping the ideological foundation of progressive politics in Nigeria. He was a strong advocate for the 1963 Constitution, which he believed would restore true federalism to the nation, granting more autonomy to the country’s regions. This he further amplified during the dark years of military dictatorship when he advocated at the forefront of the struggle to restore civilian governance and democracy to the country.

As a key figure in NADECO (National Democratic Coalition, 1993), he defied oppression and intimidation in the pursuit of democratic freedom. His courage and resilience during this period earned him the admiration of millions who saw in him a leader willing to sacrifice everything for the good of Nigeria. His commitment to federalism was never about personal gain—it was a lifelong conviction that Nigeria could only achieve true greatness by ensuring that every region, every ethnic group, and every citizen was treated with fairness and dignity. He championed several national conversations on restructuring, including his active participation in the 2014 National Conference, where he pushed for policies that could foster national unity, economic stability, and political fairness.

Even in his later years, Chief Adebanjo remained a consistent advocate for constitutional reforms and restructuring, emphasizing that Nigeria’s survival and prosperity depended on a governance system rooted in justice and devolution of power. His leadership in Afenifere and other pro-democracy groups solidified his place as one of Nigeria’s most consistent and principled voices.

*_Honouring His Legacy : An Icon of Valor_*
The Federalist Majority in recognition of his immense contributions, will take concrete steps to ensure that Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s legacy is preserved for future generations. His life was a testament to courage, integrity, and unwavering belief in the Nigerian project and that we can all make a positive difference if we build together.

As we mourn his departure, we take solace in the fact that he lived a life of purpose and left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political history. His ideas, principles, and the movement he inspired will continue to influence and shape the future of our nation.

We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife- Mommy Adebanjo, his children, extended family, the Yoruba nation and the entire country that he served so selflessly.

May Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may his labour for justice continue through all those who believe in a true inclusive and progressive Federal Republic of Nigeria.
