In a significant milestone for higher education financing in Nigeria, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), has revealed that more than 326,000 applicants have applied for the government-backed student loan scheme.
This marks a pivotal step toward easing the financial burden on students across the country.

During a media briefing in Lagos on Monday, Sawyerr provided an update on the fund’s progress, sharing that NELFUND has already disbursed an impressive sum of N18 billion to students enrolled in eligible public tertiary institutions.

The scheme, which was designed to offer financial assistance to students in government-owned universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, aims to alleviate the rising cost of education.

NELFUND introduced an online registration platform to streamline the application process. This digital approach was carefully chosen to eliminate any potential barriers or intermediaries that could hinder deserving students from accessing the loan.

Sawyerr emphasised that the goal was to ensure a fair and transparent system where applicants wouldn’t need special connections to benefit from the fund.

“We wanted to make the application process as simple and accessible as possible. By moving online, we’ve minimised the chances of anyone placing unnecessary obstacles in the way of the students,” he explained.

NELFUND offers two types of loans to students: ‘Institutional Tuition and Stipends Loans’, which cover tuition fees and living expenses, and ‘Vocational Loans’, aimed at students pursuing technical and vocational courses.

The overarching mission of NELFUND is to bridge the financial gap for students, ensuring that a lack of funds does not prevent talented individuals from receiving quality education.

Through this initiative, the Nigerian government aims to cultivate a more skilled workforce that will contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
With the fund’s growing reach, it’s clear that NELFUND is making education more accessible to thousands of Nigerian students — empowering the next generation of leaders and professionals.
