Outstanding students and managements of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the University of Port Harcourt have received state-of-the-art smartphones and Glo data packages in the on-going nation-wide presentation of phones and routers to thirty tertiary institutions by digital telecommunications solutions leader, Globacom. The project is in partnership with global ICT solutions provider, Huawei.

Under the package, five outstanding students who have the highest CGPA points in each of the selected 30 tertiary institutions have been receiveing smartphones, while the benefiting institutions are being presented with five routers each to boost learning through research and teaching.

Student beneficiaries from the Federal University of Technology who got smartphones included Lawal Adeshile of the Department of Physiology; Adebiyi Emmanuel of the Department of Building Technology; Phillip Onochiemume, Department of Accounting; Omolara Bakare, Physics Department; Okunoye Olayinka of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials and Ogundeji Emmanuel of Urban and Regional Planning Department.

University of Port Harcourt beneficiaries included Munachiso Wodi of the College of Medicine, Joshua Tom of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Esther Isonguyo of the Department of Forestry and Wildfire, Juliet Onwuka of the Department of Education Foundation and Glory Chilaka of the Department of Philosophy.

Receiving the routers, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Professor Joseph Adeola Fuwape, expressed appreciation to Globacom for the kind gesture which he opined would encourage research and motivate the students to be more diligent in their academic pursuits.

He disclosed that the institution carefully selected students who had excelled in both character and learning and had been the best in their courses for four to five years of their study as beneficiaries of the Glo-Huawei smartphones and data packages.

Professor Fuwape, therefore, encouraged other students of the school to maintain the reputation of excellence and diligence which the school was renowned for in its 38 years of existence.

Globacom’s State Manager in charge of Ondo State, Mr. Olusegun Oguntuase, called on members of the University community to explore the opportunity of the company’s on-going week-long data clinic within the school to upgrade to Glo 4G to avail themselves of the new ‘speed of life’ and enjoy memorable communication experience on the network.

He confirmed that Glo 4G is available in all tertiary institutions in the country, validating the claim that Globacom has the widest and most reliable 4G LTE coverage in Nigeria.

In the same vein, the Dean, Students Affairs, University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Otu Ekpeyong, who received the routers on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, stated, “I want to say a big thank you to Glo. I have had a wonderful relationship with Glo since my assumption of office. We are moving to the next step with Glo”.

Responding on behalf of the student beneficiaries from the University of Port Harcourt, Chilaka Glory of the Department of Philosophy said, “I’m very happy to be one of the beneficiaries and I am grateful to Glo for the opportunity.”

Institutions that have so far benefitted from the package include Babcock University, Ilishan, Ogun State; Ado Bayero University, Kano; Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Benue State University, Makurdi; University of Maiduguri; University of Calabar; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, and Kogi State University, Ayingba.
