Osun: With 403,371 votes, Adeleke defeats Oyetola, to be sworn in as sixth civilian governor in November

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday morning, declared Senator Jackson Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of Osun State governorship election held on Saturday.

With 403,371 votes from the 30 local governments, he defeated Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who got 375,027 votes.
He will be sworn in as the sixth civilian governor of the South-West state in November.
His elder brother, the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke (Serubawon), was the first civilian governor of the state from 1992 to 1993.
INEC Chief Returning Officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, announced the result.
He said: “I hereby declare that Ademola Adeleke, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected”.

Aside winning the total majority votes, the PDP also won in the majority of the state’s local governments. The PDP won in 17 of Osun’s 30 local governments while the APC won in 13.
None of the other 13 candidates who took part in the election won in any local government.
The election was seen as free of violence but characterised by vote buying.
