Oshoala’s Liverpool Ladies crash out of Champions League

Asisat Oshoala’s Liverpool Ladies failed to progress to the next round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after losing 1-0 at home to Brescia at the Select Security Stadium on Wednesday night.

The game which was Matt Beard’s final game in charge before moving to Boston Breakers in the USA saw Barbara Bonansea score the only goal of the game midway in the first half.

The first real chance fell to Asisat Oshoala in the 20th minute after she was played through by Natasha Dowie, but the Reds number 14 fired over from close range.

In the 26th minute, Beard’s side were left with a mountain to climb when the visitors took the lead against the run of play.

She was played through by Daniela Sabatio on the left side after she dispossessed Martha Harris, and Bonansea calmly placed the ball past Libby Stout.

With 14 minutes to go, Oshoala had the ball in the back of the net, which would have set up an exciting final 15 minutes, but it was disallowed for a foul on the Brescia goalkeeper.

With two minutes remaining Katie Zelem, who shined in the Liverpool midfield had a shot blocked by a Brescia defender, but at the late stage it would have been a consolation.

Oshoala was on parade for the whole duration of the encounter.
