The Nigerian Senate has approved a donation of N50 million to the families of five people who died during the abduction and rescue operation involving pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the donation during plenary on Wednesday in Abuja.
Akpabio said the Senate would give N10 million each to the families of the two teachers and three soldiers who lost their lives in connection with the incident.
He described their deaths as a painful sacrifice in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against insecurity.
The Senate President also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity.
According to the Senate, the donation is intended to support the bereaved families and recognise the sacrifices made by the victims.
The deceased teachers were identified as Michael Oyedokun and John Olaleye.
Oyedokun was reportedly beheaded by the abductors while in captivity, while Olaleye was said to have been shot dead during the attack on the school premises.
The three soldiers who died during the rescue operation were identified as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome.
Akpabio said the victims were among those affected by the May 15 abduction of pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
He said the financial support would be presented to the families as a gesture of sympathy and national recognition.
The Senate said the incident highlighted the sacrifices made by teachers, security personnel and communities affected by kidnapping and violent attacks.
The development comes amid renewed calls for stronger protection of schools and improved security operations in vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
