Authorities of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta have been commended for integrating culture into its educational curricula despite being a science based institution.
The Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Ogun State Chapter, Dr. Chris Omotosho stated this when he led members of the State Executive on a courtesy call to the office of the Vice Chancellor.
Dr. Omotosho said he was pleasantly surprised when he heard about the FUNAAB Theatre Group noting that this will further enrich the minds of students through graphic dramatisation of information.
He charged FUNAAB to increase its contributions to efforts to make Nigeria food secure especially in the area of storage and preservation.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Olusola Kehinde represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Olukayode Akinyemi, said the University was deeply committed to its core values of Excellence, Integrity and Innovation.
He said the University “does not joke with creativity and is in the process of turning Professor Wole Soyinka’s Ijegba residence into a Library and Writers’ haven for research”.
He announced that FUNAAB will establish a world class bookshop soon to complement its electronic library with facility for 24 hours’ study to improve the reading culture.
He decried the low reading culture amongst Nigerian students and pledged to support Ogun ANA’s forthcoming programmes namely the World Poetry Day and hosting of South West Authors Forum in April.
Dr. Omotosho was accompanied by a former ANA Ogun Chairman, Dr. Tope Olaifa, the General Secretary, Mr. Femi Sanyaolu, Treasurer, Mr. Samuel Ogunyinka, the PRO, Pastor Dare Folarin, Miss Calista Adebayo and Miss Gloria Urube.
