OAU: Student’s suicide not linked to academic failure

OAU

For allegedly fighting over a N3.8 million largesse, the Vice President and Director of Socials of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Students Union, Tosin Jacob and Emmanuel Adedayo, have been suspended by the school authorities.
The N3.8 million was disbursed to the union by the school management but a fight ensued on how the money would be spent.
The two officials were injured in the fight. While Adedayo sustained an injury in the arm, Jacob is currently hospitalised.
They engaged in the clash during a meeting held on Tuesday evening.
Their notice of suspension was contained in a statement by the Registrar of the university, Mr. Dotun Awoyemi, on Friday.
The statement declared that Jacob and Adedayo would be on suspension until full investigation was conducted to determine their level of culpability.
It reads in part: “Following a report of physical manhandling involving two members of the Students’ Union Central Executive Council on September 5, the university Vice Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, has suspended the duo indefinitely from the university as student.
“The VC is satisfied that the code of conduct of the university has been breached. He has therefore decided to suspend the students that were allegedly involved in the incidence to determine their levels of culpability.
“Consequently, the two students are suspended pending full investigation of the alleged breach of conduct.”
Also confirming the suspension, the Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, described the action of the students as “unpardonable”.
“No matter the level of provocation, students must take caution and not put laws into their own hands. This is a university for learning and culture,” he added.
Speaker of the OAU Students’ Representative Council, Falayi Temitope, faulted the executives for engaging in a bloody clash.
He said: “My office infers indiscipline, irresponsibility, maladministration and gross misconduct from the members of the CEC involved in the brawl.
“Any union leader that attempts to sabotage the strength of Great Ife Students for pecuniary gains would be adequately dealt with by mass of students themselves.”
