The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has announced the suspension of its industrial action and ordered public primary and secondary school teachers to resume duties on Thursday.

The decision marks the end of a temporary disruption in academic activities across the state triggered by security concerns in some communities.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan and jointly signed by the State Chairman, Mr Fatai Hassan, and the Secretary, Mr Olukayode Salami.

The union recalled that the strike was declared following the abduction of teachers and pupils in three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to the union, the suspension followed renewed engagement with the Oyo State Government, consultations with stakeholders, and directives from the national leadership after reviewing the security situation.

NUT said the move was taken in the collective interest of teachers, learners, and the general public.

The union disclosed that the state government had assured it of ongoing efforts to secure the release of abducted teachers and students.

It also stated that government had committed to strengthening school security under the Safe School Initiative.

The measures include improved public sensitisation, early warning systems, enhanced emergency response, and intensified action against criminal hideouts.

Other commitments include tackling illegal mining activities, addressing open grazing in forest reserves, and improving intelligence gathering within affected communities.

The government further promised to ensure faster prosecution of criminal suspects, strengthen the welfare of security personnel, and deploy technology to enhance surveillance in schools.

NUT also noted that a Joint Security Task Force would be deployed to vulnerable schools and access routes to improve safety.

The union added that continuous engagement with affected families would be maintained, alongside psychosocial support and rehabilitation for rescued victims.

It further highlighted plans for the payment of entitlements and gratuities to families of teachers affected by the crisis.

The leadership of the union commended teachers across Oyo State for their discipline, unity, and cooperation during the strike period.

It also praised the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) for their solidarity and support.

According to the union, their collective action played a key role in pushing for improved safety and welfare conditions in the education sector.

Teachers were urged to remain vigilant upon resumption and to promptly report any security threats within their schools and communities to the relevant authorities.

The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of educators in the state.

It also assured that engagement with the government would continue until all outstanding security concerns affecting schools are fully addressed.

The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normal academic activities across public schools in Oyo State.
