The council made the call in a communique at the end of its congress on Saturday, jointly  signed by Dalhatu Abdullahi and Muhammad Bello, Chairman and Secretary, respectively.

NUJ expressed its gratitude for the state government’s dedication and support in addressing security concerns in the state.

“Nevertheless, we implore both government authorities and citizens to redouble their efforts in combating insecurity, particularly in the eastern region of the state.

“The public is encouraged to maintain their cooperation, appreciation for the endeavors of the security agencies and to abstain from taking matters into their own hands,” it stated.

The congress also called upon the state government to increase the distribution of relief measures, given the prevailing economic challenges.

“The Sokoto State Government should expeditiously utilize its newly launched Inter-State and Intrastate commuter buses to alleviate the effects of fuel subsidy removal on transportation expenses,” it recommended.

The council also praised the government for its initiatives, which encompassed a range of projects, rehabilitation endeavors, and the beautification of roads within Sokoto city during its first 100 days in office.

It appealed for the timely completion of projects inherited by the new administration, with particular emphasis on the Sokoto Central Market, State University’s Teaching Hospital, and Premier Hospitals, all of which were vital for the overall development of the state.

NUJ also expressed its appreciation to Gov. Ahmad Aliyu for reinstating monthly stipends for the People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs)

“The government should formulate a strategy to address the issue of underaged begging and establish appropriate resettlement facilities for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) primarily concentrated within the state metropolis,” it urged.

The union further reiterated its call in its members to uphold the ethical standards of their profession as society’s watchdog, emphasizing the crucial need for continuous training and retraining of journalists by media organizations.

Some of the dignitaries at the opening session included the State Commissioner for Information Alhaji Sambo Danchadi and the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr Ali Kaigama, among others.
