The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Yakubu Wambai, says no fewer than 100 people participated in the just concluded 7th FOC West Golf Tournament in Lagos.
Wambai said this at the 7th FOC West Amateur/Pro Invitational Golf Tournament which held from Nov.17 to Nov.19, 2022 at the Dolphin Golf Club, Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos.
The tournament featured five categories including the Gross Category, Net Category, Ladies Category, Veteran Category and Senior Veteran Category.
He congratulated the golfers who came from across the country to participate in the tournament and assured that the office of the FOC West would continue to sponsor golf tourneys annually.
“The office of the FOC West is also making concerted effort to see that the yearly grant given to the Dolphin Club by the Naval Headquarters is restored.
“We will also ensure to bring out a program that is deliberately designed to catch them young within the barracks community and environs to have more membership from the early ages.
“I celebrate with the winners and urge those that did not win to continue to work hard and improve their game in subsequent tournaments,” the FOC said.
Wambai said that golf was a strategic game that brought about physical fitness while improving relationship and communication among participants in a relaxed environment.
He said that studies had shown that those who burned calories through the game, improved their overall health by lowering their risk of heart diseases, diabetes and also cancer.
“I, therefore, urge all new converts and established members to cultivate the habit of regularly playing and leverage the opportunity that competitions such as this gives to perfect their skills,” the FOC said.
Wambai noted the significance of the Alakija – Navy Town ongoing road construction to the club, barracks and the environment at large and how it would positively affect the community when completed.
“The Commander, NNS Wey, has continued to work with Lagos state government to ensure that ongoing road rehabilitation is completed to bring succor to commuters that ply the very road.
“Upon completion, I am sure that the Dolphin Club will get a massive boost of membership as it will become more accessible to golfers,” the FOC said.
Also speaking, Mr Kronakegha Uti, Captain of Dolphin Golf Club, said that he was impressed with the game of many of the golfers because a lot of them played lots of “under par”.
“The term “under par” describe a player’s score when they have taken fewer strokes than par up to a given point of the golf course.
“For instance, the course par of the golf course is 71 and it has 18 holes and there are shots for every hole that you play.
“Now, if you can play 18 holes with a net of 69, you are playing under 71 which is good but if you play with a net of 74, you are playing over 71,” Uti said.
Winners were given prizes ranging from sets of pots, electric cooker to television, fridge among other items.
Some of the winners included Taofeek Jibola, Boniface Edem, Edwin Samuel, Henry Achigbue, Samuel Wilfred, Obey George, Ada Martins, Kelechi Momoh and Rosita Anwengs.
