The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is to be rebranded to align with its peers globally.
The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, said this at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.
He said that the new NIMASA would be unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari on April 20 to coincide with the 3rd Conference of Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) holding in Abuja from April 19 to April 21.
He said that the conference, which would enhance the capacity of maritime administrations in Africa, would be attended by 32 countries.
Peterside said that the conference was being organised in conjunction with the International Maritime Administration (IMO).
The director-general said that Nigeria’s position was to rebrand the country among other countries.
“Against the backdrop of the key resolutions and decisions of the 2nd AAMA Conference held in Sandton, South Africa in October 2013, was the convening of the 3rd AAMA Conference in 2014.
“Nigeria was unable to host the 3rd Conference in 2014 and NIMASA reactivated the hosting right for April 19 to April 21, 2017.
“NIMASA is set for the 3rd Conference scheduled to hold at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria.
“This crucial 3rd AAMA Conference is set to draw a road map for future sustainable work plan of the association, ‘’ Peterside said.
According to him, the theme of the conference will be “Sustainable Use of Africa’s Oceans and Sea’’.
The NIMASA boss said that the theme was chosen against the backdrop of the Africa Union’s Declaration of Year 2015-2025 as the Decade of Africa Sea and Oceans.
“We view the hosting of AAMA as part of our drive to reposition the Nigerian maritime sector, thereby making Nigeria a force to be reckoned with again globally.
He said that the multiplier effect of the conference would go a long way in enhancing the chance of Nigeria to return to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The director-general said that the agency was about to be re-branded to enable it align with other foremost maritime administrations in the world.
He said that this was part of the agency’s plans to inject a new dose of energy into the NIMASA brand.
