Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Niki Tobi, is dead.

In a statement on Monday, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed, described the death as shocking.

A statement by his media aide, Ahuraka Yusuf Isah, reads:

“It is with a deep sense of shock but gratitude to the Almighty God, that the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon Justice Mahmud Mohammed (GCON) learnt of the death of the former Supreme Court Justice, Hon Justice Niki Tobi on Monday 20 June 2016.

“According to the information received from members of the deceased’s family, Justice Niki Tobi died by 5.30 pm on Thursday 16 June 2016 at the National Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.

“The CJN, on behalf of himself, the Justices, staff of the Supreme Court and indeed the entire Judiciary of the country commiserates with the immediate family, relations as well as friends and associates of the respected late jurist, who joined the Supreme Court Bench in 2002 and retired on 14 July 2010.

“The deceased Justice indelibly contributed to the development of jurisprudence in Nigeria and will be greatly remembered for his assiduousness in reviewing the draft 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria under the Military administration of General Abdulsalam Abubakar.

“His Lordship urges members of the deceased’s family to be comforted by the knowledge that the departed jurist served his country with commitment, dedication ‎and honesty.

“The CJN‎ prays that Almighty God will receive his soul and grant them eternal rest”.
