Samson Adamu of Nigeria has been appointed as the Acting Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a historic milestone for the country.

Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to hold the top administrative position in CAF since the organisation was founded more than seven decades ago.

The appointment was confirmed in a statement by Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

According to the statement, Adamu succeeds Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who stepped down to pursue leadership ambitions within his country’s football federation, FECOFA

Before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events where he played a key role in organising major African football competitions.

His experience in managing continental tournaments was cited as a major factor in his appointment.

The decision to appoint him was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently approved during the organisation’s congress held in Cairo, Egypt, on March 29.

Adamu’s new role is expected to place him at the centre of CAF’s administrative and strategic operations, overseeing key football development initiatives across Africa.

The development has been widely seen as a boost for Nigeria’s representation in continental football governance.
