The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has vowed to launch protests and organize picketing activities targeting South African businesses in Nigeria. This follows a resurgence of xenophobic attacks in South Africa that have reportedly led to the deaths of two Nigerians.
In a statement issued on May 6, 2026, from Ibadan, Mr. Kayode Adeyemo, the coordinator of NANS South-West, expressed his outrage over the renewed violence against Nigerians. He called the killings a “painful reminder of the ongoing hostility” that Nigerians face in South Africa.
“The recent deaths of two Nigerians are not just isolated incidents but reflect a broader pattern of violence against our people. This targeted hostility must end immediately,” Adeyemo stated.
He further emphasized that NANS would mobilize its members for peaceful protests and picketing outside South African-owned companies operating in Nigeria. The student leader criticized the presence of these firms, pointing out the moral contradiction of these businesses thriving in Nigeria while their home country fails to protect Nigerian nationals abroad.
“It is unjustifiable for businesses to profit in Nigeria while Nigerians face violence and fear in South Africa. This contradiction cannot continue,” Adeyemo said.
NANS has called on the South African government to take swift action to protect foreign nationals, especially Nigerians, and to ensure justice for the victims of the recent attacks. The student body also expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with business representatives, diplomats, and other stakeholders to resolve the issue.
“This is a time for accountability and decisive action. Nigerian students will not stand by idly while the lives and dignity of our compatriots are under threat,” Adeyemo concluded.
