Nigerian Leader Urges FG to Intervene Over South Africa Anti-Immigration Deadline

A Nigerian community representative in South Africa has called on the Federal Government to urgently engage South African authorities over rising tension linked to a June 30 ultimatum issued by anti-immigration groups.

The appeal was made by Ekos Akpokabayen, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), in a statement released on Tuesday.

Akpokabayen warned that the situation surrounding the June 30 deadline could heighten insecurity risks for foreign nationals, including Nigerians living across South Africa.

He clarified that the deadline was not issued by the South African government, but by groups advocating the removal of undocumented migrants.

According to him, such developments could trigger unrest if not properly managed through diplomatic engagement.

The NUSA leader urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately open diplomatic channels with Pretoria and relevant stakeholders.

He stressed that early intervention would help reduce tensions and prevent possible attacks on foreign residents and businesses.

“I urge the Nigerian government to take proactive steps by engaging South African authorities on this matter,” he said.

Akpokabayen expressed concern that criminal groups could exploit any unrest to target foreign-owned businesses.

He warned that both documented and undocumented migrants could be affected if tensions escalate.

The community leader also advised the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to intensify monitoring and communication with Nigerian citizens

He urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding, and security-conscious amid growing uncertainty.

Akpokabayen said continuous engagement between community leaders and diplomatic missions would help ensure timely updates and protection strategies.

He expressed optimism that coordinated efforts between both countries would prevent escalation.
