The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, Fatai Tijani, has outlined an ambitious plan to strengthen security, improve accountability, and rebuild public trust in policing across the state.

Speaking during his inaugural address at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Tijani emphasised the need for modern, people-centered policing in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

He described Lagos as a highly dynamic environment with complex security challenges, noting that innovative approaches would be required to address evolving crime patterns.

The police chief said his administration would prioritise public safety, stressing that effective law enforcement is critical to economic growth and social stability.

Tijani highlighted the importance of integrating technology into policing stating that digital tools and intelligence systems would be deployed to enhance crime detection and prevention.

He added that data-driven strategies would improve operational efficiency and help officers respond more effectively to emerging threats.

The commissioner also underscored the value of collaboration with other security agencies, including the military and intelligence services,  to ensure coordinated responses to criminal activities.

A key focus of his leadership, he said, would be community policing, aimed at strengthening partnerships between residents and law enforcement.

He encouraged Lagos residents to actively cooperate with the police by sharing information that could help prevent crime and maintain peace.

Tijani also placed strong emphasis on youth engagement, noting that involving young people in security initiatives could contribute to long-term stability.

On professionalism, the CP warned against misconduct within the force, reiterating that officers would be held accountable for their actions.

He assured the public that issues such as police brutality and unethical behaviour would not be tolerated under his leadership.

“The command will operate with discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights,” he stated.

To enhance service delivery, Tijani announced plans to improve training, welfare, and capacity-building programmes for officers.

He said a well-trained and motivated workforce would be better positioned to serve the public effectively.

The CP also identified operational priorities, including increased police visibility, improved response time, and targeted interventions in crime-prone areas.

He encouraged residents to report complaints through official channels such as the Police Complaint Response Unit (PCRU) assuring that all grievances would be addressed promptly.

Tijani reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and reform, pledging to build a police force that earns the trust and confidence of Lagos residents.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, who has been promoted to Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and redeployed to Zone 2 Command,  expressed confidence in Tijani’s leadership.

Jimoh said his successor has the capacity to sustain and improve on existing security achievements in the state.
