The Tax Justice Network (TJN), in collaboration with the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), has taken a sensitization campaign on prompt payment of tax to the Monday Market in Kaduna South Local Government Area of the state.
The TJN is an associate of individuals and groups interested in engaging issues related to tax justice and promoting a fair, just, equitable and progressive tax regime in Nigeria.
It has a spread across the sub-national level.
During the campaign, Mr, Femi Johnson, a member of the network, said the essence of the outing was to sensitize the people to the need to pay their taxes and also to know if there was a system on ground that allowed them to pay their taxes.
He said, “We are also doing a feedback survey so we can know if there are existing challenges and issues on ground as it relates to payment of tax so that it can help us inform other data that we gather at the market.”
The Leader of the market, Bashir Adamu, assured the network of his support on payment of tax.
According to him, “There are over 10, 000 traders and visitors to the market every Monday; this goes to show how important the market is.
“There is a need for the government to use the money collected through tax to provide toilet facilities and proper waste disposal as these are major challenges in the market.”
He explained that taxes were collected every Monday from traders and annually from shop owners.
He, therefore, called on the traders to respect leaders of the market by paying their taxes.
The Market Manager, Isiyaku Bello, stressed that as long as the traders realized value for their money, they would pay their taxes.
He called on the government to provide adequate security for the market, adding that “shop owners are paying through their nose to secure their property”.
