The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has unveiled a new digital broadcasting initiative aimed at improving access to information, strengthening Nigeria’s media landscape, and accelerating the country’s digital economy transformation.

The initiative, tagged “The Big Picture” and supported by the Free TV digital broadcasting platform, was officially launched in Abuja.

NBC Director-General, Charles Ebuebu, described the platform as a major step toward building a modern national communication system.

He said the initiative is designed to ensure that Nigerians, regardless of location or social status, can access high-definition television, educational content, and verified information services.

According to him, the project also aims to expand opportunities within Nigeria’s broadcasting and creative industries.

Ebuebu explained that the “Big Picture” initiative is not only a technological upgrade but also a strategic economic project.

He noted that it is expected to stimulate investment, empower local content creators, and strengthen Nigeria’s media ecosystem.

“The Big Picture is about democratising access to information, unlocking creative opportunities, and encouraging investment across the broadcasting value chain,” he said.

He added that the platform would improve spectrum efficiency and expand consumer choice in the digital broadcasting space.

The NBC boss said the initiative represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s transition toward full digital broadcasting.

He linked the project to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital innovation and economic diversification.

Ebuebu also acknowledged the support of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

He emphasized that the success of the project depended on collaboration between government agencies, broadcasters, investors, manufacturers, and development partners.

According to him, collective participation will ensure the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s digital broadcasting ecosystem.

Ebuebu expressed optimism that the platform would position Nigeria as a leading hub for digital broadcasting in Africa.

He said the initiative would also enhance innovation, expand access to reliable information, and strengthen the country’s global media competitiveness.

“Today, Nigeria is choosing a digital future built on innovation, inclusion, and progress,” he said.
