The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has appealed to the management of the National Art Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos to prioritise its workers’ welfare.

Lagos State Chairman of RATTAWU, Mr Ishola Adejumo, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the General Manager of the theatre, Mrs Adetola Akerele, on Monday.

Adejumo expressed concerns at alleged plans to concession the theatre, saying that it might lead to job loss by members of the union working in the theatre.

“The president appointed you, and we are most confident working with you so that our people will not suffer unjustly because they are the architect and the foundation up to this stage.

“We appreciate the corporate social responsibility provided by the Bankers Committee and all other stakeholders partaking in renovating this place.

“It is for our national pride and it should not be a thing that will make our members to suffer unjustly.

“We are very concerned about any likely job loss; we want to hear from you so that we know where to take it from,“ he said.

The chairman said that the union would support the management in efforts toward the welfare of RATTAWU members working in the theatre.

“We always support a management that is passionate and concerned about the welfare of workers and success of the organisation.

“We have seen your recent moves. We are ready to align with you to support you as a critical stakeholder in the industry,“ the chairman said.

The newly-elected Chairman of RATTAWU, National Theatre Chapter, Mr Augustine Agada, expressed optimism that Akerele would work in the interest of workers.

Agada said: “I came on board as a result of the struggle to return to the renovated National Art Theatre. We will not relent in the struggle.

“We were in a meeting with the general manager today, and she told us her position on the matter.

“We are pleased with her response and want to believe and hope that she will work in the interest of all staff.”

In her response, Akerele assured the union that workers’ welfare was a priority to her administration.

She said she was willing to work closely with members of the union.

“Communication channel will always be open.

“I am always available,” she said.
