The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has advised the House standing committees to be thorough during the six weeks oversight function given to them.
This, he said, was to ensure the budget performance of 2023 fiscal year.
The speaker gave the advice during the House proceedings on Monday in Lafia.
Abdullahi, who declared that the House will commence six weeks oversight function, beginning from Oct. 17, advised the lawmakers not to compromise while carrying out the task at the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
“We cannot sit down to fold our hands to watch things going wrongly.
“This House appropriated funds for MDAs. We have the constitutional responsibilities to find out whether the money released to MDAs is used appropriately or justifiable.
“As very soon, His Excellency, Gov. Abdullahi Sule will place before this House the 2024 budget. It is pertinent for us to know the performance of 2023 budget.
“The House from tomorrow will commence oversight function for six weeks,” he said.
Abdullahi however explained that the oversight function was not to witch hunt anybody, but to ensure that the right things are done for the overall development of the state.
He urged the management and staff of MDAs to give their necessary support and cooperation to the various committees to enable them succeed.
The speaker also charged the committees to be up and doing in carrying out the oversight function.
“You must not only check records but you must go to the sites as the state government awarded roads contracts across the state.
“Education, for instance, you must visit our primary and secondary schools as we will not do good to the system if we did not correct abnormalities,” he said.
The speaker also urged the committees to maintain the reputation of the House by ensuring that they do the right things during the oversight function.
He expressed optimism on the ability and capacity of the committees to deliver on their jobs.
