Murray targets Djokovic’s No. 1 spot

Andy Murray has set his sights on overtaking Novak Djokovic as world No. 1 after winning his second Wimbledon title.

The Scot claimed his third Grand Slam triumph with a straight-sets win over Milos Raonic on Sunday and said his best tennis is yet to come.

“It’s possible,” Murray said. “I’d rather set the bar as high as possible and not quite achieve it. It’s better to try to finish No. 1 in the world and finish at two.

Andy Murray completed a three-year journey full of highs and lows to return to the pinnacle of the game by winning his second Wimbledon title.

Unlike three years ago, when Andy Murray won Wimbledon for an entire nation, this championship was for him, plain and simple.

Andy Murray’s victory over Milos Raonic was more straightforward than many had predicted, so we asked those in the know to tell us how the Wimbledon final unfolded.

“I’d love to get to No. 1 obviously but I think a lot of people are forgetting what Novak’s done because he lost in the third round here.

“The last 18 months he’s been unbelievable, he’s hardly lost any matches at all so I know if I want to get there I’m going to have to try to win more matches against him. I’d imagine he’ll come back very strong from the loss here.”

Djokovic became the first man in 47 years to hold all four major titles when he denied Murray in the French Open final last month.

The Serb’s 30-match Grand Slam win streak was ended by Sam Querrey at Wimbledon but he still leads world No. 2 Murray by nearly 5,000 points in the ATP rankings.
