Mubi: Death toll rises to 50 as Buhari, Atiku condemn suicide attack

The Adamawa State Police Command says the death toll in Tuesday’s Mubi mosque suicide attack has risen to 50.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Othman Abubakar, confirmed this on Tuesday.
Abubakar said that a young boy was responsible for the blast which occurred during the early morning prayer.
“We have 50 dead and we are now trying to get the exact number of those injured ,” Abubakar said.
NAN reports that the attack happened in Dazala area of Mubi town in Adamawa on Tuesday around 5 a.m. when Muslims were observing the early morning prayer.
The incident was the first in three years since the liberation of Mubi town from Boko Haram insurgents in 2014.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the suicide bomb blast, describing it as “very cruel and dastardly.”
Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Tuesday, commiserated with families of the several victims, government and people of the state.
He assured that government would do everything required to secure the state from the deadly menace of Boko Haram.
The President enjoined the people in the entire North-east to be more vigilant and report suspicious persons to security agencies in order to avert further attacks on soft targets by the terrorist group.
The statement also stated that Buhari has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to deploy more police personnel to prevent further attacks by armed bandits in Zamfara.
While noting the current moves by the IGP to review police personnel and strategy in the state, the President directed him to visit the state and report back his findings about the deadly attacks.
The directives followed recent killings and wanton destruction carried out by unknown gunmen on communities in Shinkafi and Maradun Local Government Areas of the state.
Buhari prayed that God would console the bereaved families in the Adamawa and Zamfara incidents, heal the injured, and grant rest to the souls of the departed.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the attack as a heart-rending crime against human liberty.
A statement by Atiku Media Office quoted the former vice president as having received news of the Mubi attack with sadness.
According to the statement: “For a community that is healing and rebuilding after severe devastation by terrorists in recent past, a yet another suicide bomb attack that claims scores of human lives is an attack on humanity and the liberty that it guarantees.
“Terrorists seek to instill fears, but through our collective courage and determination we shall triumph. We must ensure that liberty trumps fears and domination.
“By being vigilant and through a collaborative team spirit between the civic public and the security apparatus we must fight for liberty. We are all soldiers of liberty. Our strength lies in the fact that we fight for a good cause and we shall fight together till we are safe.”
While harping on the need to greater emphasis on intelligence gathering, the former vice president notes that respective homes are the take-off points in the fight to flush out terrorism from a community as parents must get full information about the activities of their wards and children.
“Terrorists are representatives of dark and evil forces. Parents and guardians must ensure that their children and wards do not get enlisted by these criminal agents of darkness.”
The former vice-president asks relevant government authorities to provide succor to the bereaved families and give adequate healthcare provision to the wounded victims of the attack.
