Idowu Oyewole, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and the Chief Security Officer (CSO) in charge of the convoy of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, has been shot dead in Akure.
Oyewole, a father of three, was shot about 8p.m. on Wednesday evening in his house near the Ado-Ekiti Garage in the state capital.
The body of the 45-year-old officer was discovered on Thursday morning a few metres from his house.
Freedom Online learned that he was not the target of armed robbers who invaded the area on Wednesday night “but it happened that he was shot immediately the robbers saw him with his service pistol”.
Said a source: “Armed robbers came to a house very close to his own around 8 p.m. A boy, who heard noise inside and thinking some people were fighting, ran to Oyewole’s house to inform him because everybody knew he was a policeman.
“Oyewole was eating his dinner when the boy informed him. He quickly left his food, took his service pistol and ran to the house. On getting there, the robbers saw him with his service pistol and opened fire on him immediately.
“When residents heard the shots, everybody shut their doors. Nobody dared come out. Of course, the armed robbers left immediately. Since Oyewole was a police officer, nobody really thought about looking for him. It was not until in the morning of today (Thursday) that some people discovered his body a few metres to the spot. Apparently, he was running to a nearby hospital to get an urgent medical attention”.
The body was later taken away to a morgue and police officers were drafted to the scene to begin investigation.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the killing.
He described Oyewole, who was attached to the Mobile Unit of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), as a dedicated officer.
Joseph also said investigation had started on the killing, promising that the perpetrators would be arrested.
