The Obidient Movement is deeply saddened by the tragic death of 26-year-old physiotherapist, Mary Habila, whose body was discovered under disturbing circumstances at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
When a young Nigerian dies inside the official residence of a serving minister, the Nigerian people are entitled to nothing less than the full truth. This is no longer just a private tragedy. It is a matter of national public interest, and justice must not only be done, but it must also be seen to be done.
We are, therefore, alarmed by reports that Mary Habila’s burial is being arranged while critical questions surrounding her death remain unanswered, and while investigations are reportedly still ongoing.
Any attempt to conclude this matter before all forensic examinations have been completed and all relevant evidence has been examined will only deepen public suspicion and undermine confidence in the justice system.
The circumstances surrounding her death demand far more than routine police inquiries. Reports indicate that Mary Habila was found naked.
Questions remain regarding the events leading to her death, who was present, the timeline of events, what emergency measures were taken, and whether every forensic procedure necessary to establish the cause of death has been completed.
These are legitimate questions that deserve credible answers.
We therefore call for:
1. An independent investigation involving agencies that are free from political influence.
2. A comprehensive forensic examination, including the release of the full autopsy findings to the public.
3. A Coroner’s Inquest to independently establish the cause and circumstances of Mary Habila’s death.
4. The preservation of every piece of physical, electronic, medical and documentary evidence connected to this case.
5. Full public disclosure of the findings upon the conclusion of the investigation.
This case also brings renewed attention to longstanding concerns over unresolved allegations of disappearances and suspicious incidents associated with Ebonyi State during Senator Umahi’s time as governor.
Five engineers of NELAN Consulting – Engrs. Nelson Onyemeh, Ernest Edeani, Ikechukwu Ejiofor, Samuel Aneke and Stanley Nwazulum – are still missing.
They were responsible for ensuring that an AfDB-funded project in Ebonyi State complied with contractual specifications and met the required standards. Before their disappearance, they were said to be having a running battle with Senator Umahi over the control and oversight of the project.
Whether those concerns ultimately prove connected or not, they underscore why transparency is indispensable. Public officials, especially those occupying the highest offices of government, must be held to the highest standards of accountability. The search for truth must never be sacrificed for political convenience.
We urge the Nigeria Police Force, the National Human Rights Commission, the National Assembly, civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, and all institutions committed to justice and the rule of law to ensure that this case is investigated thoroughly, independently, and without interference.
No Nigerian family should be forced to bury a loved one while unanswered questions continue to hang over the circumstances of their death.
Mary Habila deserved dignity in life.
She deserves justice in death.
The Obidient Movement will continue to stand with every Nigerian demanding truth, accountability and equal justice under the law, irrespective of the office or influence of those involved.
