An unemployed man, Imo Agbi, on Thursday in Lagos, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for breaking into the apartment of his girlfriend, stealing her valuables in the process.
Agbi, 29, a resident of No.12, Giwa St., off Magboro, Ogun State, is being tried for burglary and stealing of laptop, cell phone and N170,000 belonging to his girlfriend.
The prosecutor, Inspector Essien Ndarake, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 13 at No. 6, Dopemu Road, Agege, Lagos.
Ndarake said that the accused unlawfully broke into the apartment of one Miss Joy Ohnehere, the complainant and stole her cash and valuables.
“The accused burgled the room of his girlfriend and stole her laptop, a Samsung phone valued N82,000 and a N170,000 cash,’’ he said.
“On that fateful day, the complainant came back from market and discovered that her room and wardrobe had been burgled and her valuables and cash were stolen.
“The complainant’s co-tenants told her that they saw her man friend while running away with a big bag,’’ he said.
The offences, Ndarake said, contravened Sections 285 and 305 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 305 provides that if convicted of the offences, the accused is liable to seven years imprisonment.
However, the accused pleaded innocence of the offences and the court granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. Balogun, adjourned the case to July 4 for mention.
