A 42-year-old man, Femi Fagite, who allegedly defrauded Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) of N5 million was on Tuesday remanded in prison on the orders of an Ado Ekiti Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and fraud.
The Police Legal Adviser, Mr Femi Falade, told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 17, 2015 in Ado Ekiti.
He alleged that the accused conspired with others and defrauded the legal icon of N5 million.
The offences, he said, contravened Sections 1 (3) and 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences Act, 2006.
Falade had requested the court to remand the accused, saying the court lacks the jurisdiction to try the case.
He also said there was need for further investigations and arraignment of the accused at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Femi  Alonge, urged the court to grant him bail, saying ‎the offence is bailable.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Omolola Akosile, remanded the accused in prison and adjourned the case until July 27
for mention.
