Man, 32, arraigned for allegedly detaining police officer

A 32-year-old man, Chidi Igwe, who allegedly held a police officer and detained him for hours was on Monday docked before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused was, however, granted bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Igwe is facing a four-count charge of unlawful detention, driving without licence, obstructing highway and dangerous driving.
The Prosecutor, Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 4 at Bourdillion Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
He said that the accused kidnapped one Sergeant Babashola Afolayan and detained him in his car, with registration No. EKY 282 BK.
Osuji alleged that the accused drove his car without licence and caused obstruction on the highway.
“He drove his car in a dangerous manner without any regard to other users of the highway,’’ he said.
Osuji said the offences contravened Sections 18 (1), 45 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law, 2012 and Section 269 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 269 provides a 10-year jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Daniel Abbe, urged the court to admit his client to bail on liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. G. Omoyele, ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and must be tax compliant.
Omoyele adjourned the case till April 5 for mention.
