Man, 23, pleads guilty to N880,000 property theft charge

A Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos, on Tuesday, remanded a 23-year-old man, Daniel Okoh, for allegedly stealing property worth N880,000.

The Magistrate, Mrs Linda Balogun, ordered the remand of the defendant till Aug. 9 for a review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

The defendant, whose house address was not provided, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp Chekwube Okeh, told the court that Okoh and one other still at large, committed the offences on June 28 at Morning Side Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Okeh said that Okoh and his accomplice had jumped into the hotel, where they both stole one bottle of Rémy Martin, a bottle of Martell and five mobile phones, all valued at N880,000.

She said that Okoh was apprehended after a CCTV (closed-circuit television) caught the duo about to jump into another building, while his accomplice escaped with the stolen property.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 carries two years imprisonment for offenders.
