Some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) have endorsed the proposal by President Goodluck Jonathan for adoption of two-party system in Nigeria.
Mr Taiwo Kolawole, the Deputy Speaker, said on Sunday that two party system would strengthen the country’s democracy.
“For me, two party system is ideal for the country at this point in time.
“That does not mean that other parties will be jettisoned, but its adoption must follow due process of the Constitution,” he said.
Mr Olusegun Olulade, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security and Strategy, said that two-party system would proffer lasting solution to ethnic and tribal polarisation of the country.
“That is why we always refer to the period of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and National Republican Convention (NRC) in terms of political development.
“That was the time when we had two Muslims as candidates; the late Chief Moshood Abiola and Alhaji Bashir Tofa, and nobody complained about religion.
“The system brought unity to the country in all ramifications,” he said.
The lawmaker said that the system would allow and encourage independent candidates to contest elections.
Mr Bisi Yusuf (ACN Alimosho Constituency 1) said that the two-party system would be the best for Nigeria’s democracy.
He said that the system would allow Nigerians to discuss issues instead of personalities.
“The two-political party system will give this country the best of democracy.
“It will allow Nigerians to debate more on issues and not personalities and this would allow the best candidates to emerge,” he said.
The lawmaker said that two-party system would also allow true representatives to emerge.
President Jonathan recently canvassed for the adoption of the two-party system in Nigeria, saying that this would be in the interest of the nation.
He made the suggestion in Abuja at the Peoples Democratic Party National Executive Committee meeting.
