Mr Bisi Yusuf, the Chairman, House Committee on Commerce and Transportation, Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) has commended President Goodluck Jonathan over the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Yusuf told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that the president should implement the project to the letter, to facilitate economic development of the country.
“The road is overdue for reconstruction and it has created lots of hazards to the economic advancement of the country because of its importance.
“We thank God that the president has seen the importance of the expressway and I urge him to implement the project to the letter to advance the economy of the country.
“I give kudos to him because many lives have been lost as a result of the bad road,’’ he said.
Mr Rotimi Olowo, the Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, LAHA, also told NAN that the road, when completed, would facilitate economic activities within the states.
Olowo said that the expressway was one of the most important roads in the country which needed urgent attention.
He urged the Federal Government to put some measures in place that would fast -track the project for quick execution.
“Though the expressway is overdue for reconstruction because it has claimed so many lives, it is a pleasure that the president is interested in the reconstruction of the road now.
“At least, people will not be travelling under tension or panicking when travelling along the expressway.
“It will also encourage free flow of commercial activities within the states,’’ Olowo said.
The President had on Friday inaugurated the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with a pledge that the N167 billion-project would be completed in 48 months.
The reconstruction of the 35-year-old road would be handled by Messrs Julius Berger Plc and Reynolds Construction Company Ltd.
