No fewer than nine million children are expected to be immunized against Yellow fever in the 44 local government areas of Kano in November 2022.
The Kano state Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa, made this known on Tuesday evening at a news conference.
He said that Kano state government in collaboration with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and other development partners would conduct the exercise.
He explained that the implementation of the campaign across the LGAs was staged in two phases with the first phase covering 28 Local Government Areas from Nov. 6 to Nov. 19, 2022.
The second phase, according to Tsanyawa, will be conducted in 16 Local governments between Nov. 21 to Dec. 5, 2022.
“It is important to point that the Yellow Fever campaign is set to achieve significant coverage to develop immunity against the yellow fever disease.
“It is also enough to cover the gap left over by the routine immunization coverage over the years.
“Most of the vaccine preventable disease mortality and morbidity can be averted through vaccination.
“Globally, yellow fever outbreaks continue to be a major public health concern and it has been targeted for elimination in Kano state,” Tsanyawa explained.
Furthermore, the commissioner said that Kano had made giant strides over the years to improve routine immunization based on national guidelines.
With support of the Dangote and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations, the state committed a lot of resources to immunization services and provision of potent vaccines to all eligible children.
“With the expiration of the MOU in 2017, Kano state sustained the funding for routine immunization services, where this year alone, monthly standing order for release of N35 million was implemented,” he said.
The commissioner then solicited the support of the media in spreading the campaign through various media.
He also appealed to residents to ensure effective participation in the campaign by making sure that their children are immunized.
